第一课Lesson 1

How to Talk to Your Supervisor

At work, use formal language — different from talking with friends
Formal (at work)
  • "Good morning, Mr. Chen." Good morning, Mr. Chen."
  • "Could you help me with this?" 您能帮我看一下吗?"Could you help me with this?"
  • "Thank you very much." Thank you very much."
  • "I have a question, when you have a minute." I have a question, when you have a minute."
Too casual (avoid)
  • "Yo, what's up?" 嘿,怎么样?"Yo, what's up?"
  • "Gimme that." Gimme that."
  • "Thanks, dude." Thanks, dude."
  • "Hey!" (interrupting loudly)
When to interrupt vs. wait
一般问题 → 等上司说完话,或问 "Do you have a minute?"(您有一分钟吗?)Emergencies or safety → speak up immediately. Other questions → wait until they finish, then ask "Do you have a minute?"
第二课Lesson 2

Asking for Help

Don't pretend to understand — asking saves more time than fixing mistakes
"I'm not sure I understand. Could you explain again, please?"
I'm not sure I understand. Could you explain again?
When supervisor speaks too fast or uses hard words
"Could you show me how to do this?"
Could you show me how to do this?
First time doing a task
"Sorry, what does ___ mean?"
Sorry, what does ___ mean?
When you hear a word you don't know
"Just to make sure I understand — you want me to ___ ?"
Just to make sure — you want me to ___, right?
Repeat back the task to confirm

A · B · C🙋 Vote: Which one is best? A · B · C
✓ C 最专业 — 给出原因 + 提供替代方案✓ C is the most professional — explains why + offers alternative
A is too blunt. B says "yes" but doesn't follow through — your boss loses trust. C is polite, gives a reason, and offers an alternative — showing respect and reliability.

When Problems Happen

When You Have a Problem at Work

Follow the steps — start small, keep written records
Step 1
Talk to Your Supervisor
State facts, don't blame. "I noticed there might be a scheduling conflict this week — can we talk?"
Step 2
If your supervisor doesn't help — or your supervisor IS the problem — contact HR. Discrimination, harassment, or safety issues should go to HR directly. Use email so there's a record.
Step 3
Contact CSC or Government Agency
If the company doesn't fix it, or for serious issues (wage theft, labor law violations) — CSC provides bilingual help. CA Labor Commissioner (DLSE) handles wage disputes — no immigration status required.
Important — Keep Records
Dates, times, what was said, who was there, copies of emails. If things escalate, these become key evidence.
